Multitasking Feels Like a Superpower — Your Brain Is Actually Running a Con on You
Somewhere along the way, multitasking became a personality trait. People list it on resumes. Managers praise it in performance reviews. Open office layouts were literally designed around the assumption that handling multiple things simultaneously was a sign of a high-functioning employee.
The neuroscience community looked at all of this and had a fairly clear response: that's not what's happening.
The research started accumulating in the early 2000s and has only gotten more consistent since. What we call multitasking is not, in most cases, actually multitasking. And the gap between how productive it makes us feel and how productive it actually makes us is one of the more striking disconnects in modern workplace psychology.
What Your Brain Is Actually Doing
The human brain handles most complex cognitive tasks — reading, writing, reasoning, problem-solving — through a system that requires focused attention. Neuroscientists sometimes refer to this as the brain's "central executive," the part of your prefrontal cortex that allocates mental resources to what you're working on.
Here's the catch: that system operates largely in serial, not parallel. It can only fully engage with one demanding task at a time.
When you think you're writing an email while listening to a meeting while glancing at a Slack notification, what's actually happening is rapid task-switching. Your brain is toggling between inputs — quickly enough that it feels continuous, but never actually running both processes simultaneously at full capacity.
Every switch comes with a cost. Researchers call it "switch cost" or "task-switching cost" — the brief period of reduced performance and increased error rate that follows each transition. Studies from the American Psychological Association have found that even small interruptions can add up to a 40 percent reduction in productive output over the course of a workday. You're not working faster. You're working more, with worse results.
The Part Where It Gets Psychologically Interesting
If multitasking makes us less effective, why does it feel like the opposite?
This is where it gets genuinely fascinating. Research by Shalena Srna and colleagues, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found that people who believed they were multitasking reported feeling more engaged and productive — even when their actual performance was measurably worse than those doing one thing at a time.
The feeling of busyness, it turns out, is its own reward. When you're toggling between tasks, your brain interprets the stimulation and activity as productivity. You're doing things. Multiple things. That sensation of constant motion registers as accomplishment, even when the output doesn't reflect it.
There's also a dopamine component. Each new notification, each task switch, each moment of checking something new triggers a small release of dopamine — the same neurotransmitter involved in reward-seeking behavior. The modern multitasking environment isn't just distracting. For many people, it's genuinely reinforcing, in the same way that scrolling social media is reinforcing. The brain keeps returning to the behavior because the behavior feels good, regardless of whether it's producing results.
How Workplace Culture Made It Worse
The rise of multitasking as a professional virtue didn't happen by accident. It tracked closely with the rise of digital communication tools — email in the '90s, instant messaging in the 2000s, Slack and Teams and constant notification ecosystems in the 2010s.
Each new tool promised to make collaboration faster and easier. What they also did was create an always-on expectation. Responding quickly became a signal of engagement. Being available across multiple channels simultaneously became a proxy for being a hard worker. The environment rewarded the appearance of multitasking even when the underlying work suffered for it.
Open office plans, which became fashionable partly on the theory that they'd increase collaboration and energy, also created physical environments that made focused single-task work extremely difficult. Studies on open offices have found they actually reduce face-to-face interaction while dramatically increasing digital interruptions — the worst of both worlds for cognitive performance.
The pandemic-era shift to remote work, for all its complications, gave researchers an interesting natural experiment. Some studies found that workers in remote settings — with more control over their interruption environment — showed productivity gains on focused, complex tasks. The office, in some cases, had been making things worse.
The Exception: Truly Automatic Tasks
It's worth being precise about what the research does and doesn't say. Multitasking isn't impossible in all forms.
When one of the tasks is highly automatic — something your brain can run on something close to autopilot — combining it with a second task becomes more feasible. Folding laundry while listening to a podcast. Walking while having a phone conversation. These combinations work reasonably well because one task doesn't require significant cognitive resources.
The problem is that most of what gets called multitasking in professional settings involves two cognitively demanding tasks: writing and listening, reading and analyzing, planning while communicating. Those combinations are where the costs pile up.
What Actually Works
The research points fairly consistently toward something called "time-blocking" or focused single-tasking — setting aside dedicated periods for one type of work, reducing interruptions during those windows, and batching communication into separate designated times.
This isn't a revolutionary insight. It's basically the opposite of how most American offices have been organized for the past twenty years.
The reason it hasn't caught on more broadly comes back to that same psychological trap: focused single-tasking doesn't feel as productive as juggling multiple things. It can feel slow, even boring. The lack of constant stimulation reads as inefficiency, even when the output is measurably better.
The Real Story
Multitasking isn't a skill. It's a habit that feels like a skill — one that your brain actively reinforces because switching between tasks is stimulating, and stimulation feels like progress.
The neuroscience on this has been settled for a while. The workplace culture hasn't caught up. And until it does, a lot of people will keep ending their workdays feeling exhausted and busy while wondering why so little actually got done.
