One Man Cracked His Knuckles Every Day for 60 Years to Prove Your Parents Wrong

If you grew up in an American household, there's a reasonable chance someone in your family told you to stop cracking your knuckles. The warning was usually delivered with a grimace and a firm prediction: keep doing that and you'll have arthritis by the time you're forty. It was stated with the confidence of established medical fact.

It was not established medical fact. It was, and remains, one of the most persistent health myths passed down through American family life — and the story of how researchers finally put it to rest is genuinely one of the more entertaining episodes in the history of medicine.

The Warning That Echoed Through Every Kitchen Table

The arthritis-from-knuckle-cracking belief has been floating around for at least a century. It has the feel of folk wisdom — the kind of thing that gets repeated so often across so many generations that it eventually sounds like something a doctor must have said somewhere. Parents told their kids. Kids told their kids. The warning outlasted actual medical consensus by decades.

The intuition behind it isn't completely irrational. Knuckle cracking sounds violent. That sharp pop seems like it should be doing something to your joints. And arthritis is a joint disease. The mental connection between the two is easy to make, even if it's anatomically unfounded.

But here's what the research has consistently found: there is no meaningful link between knuckle cracking and arthritis. None.

What's Actually Making That Sound

For a long time, even scientists weren't entirely sure what caused the cracking noise. The leading explanation for decades was that the pop came from a gas bubble collapsing inside the synovial fluid — the liquid that lubricates your joints. More recent imaging research, including a 2015 study out of the University of Alberta that used MRI to watch the process in real time, suggests the sound is actually created by a gas cavity forming rapidly in the joint fluid, not collapsing.

Either way, what you're hearing is essentially a pressure event in fluid. Not bones grinding. Not cartilage tearing. Not anything that resembles the mechanical process that causes osteoarthritis, which involves the slow breakdown of protective cartilage over time, usually driven by genetics, age, injury, or chronic inflammation.

The sound is dramatic. The underlying event is fairly mundane.

The Researcher Who Made It Personal

This is where the story gets genuinely entertaining.

Dr. Donald Unger, a California physician, was apparently so annoyed by his mother's warnings about knuckle cracking that he decided to conduct a personal experiment. For approximately 60 years, he cracked the knuckles on his left hand at least twice a day, every day, while leaving his right hand completely alone as a control.

At the end of his six-decade experiment, he examined both hands carefully. No arthritis in either one. His conclusion, published in Arthritis & Rheumatism in 1998, was characteristically dry: the results suggested that cracking knuckles did not cause arthritis, and also that his mother was wrong.

For this dedication to science — and to proving a point — Dr. Unger was awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2009. The Ig Nobel honors research that "first makes people laugh, then makes them think." It's a legitimate prize, and Unger's experiment, while hardly a rigorous clinical trial, captured something that larger studies had also been finding.

Larger studies had indeed been finding the same thing. A 1990 study published in the Journal of Family Practice examined patients in an internal medicine clinic and found no connection between habitual knuckle cracking and arthritis. Subsequent research confirmed the pattern.

So Why Did Everyone Believe It?

A few things kept this myth alive well past its expiration date.

First, the sound. The pop is visceral and a little unsettling, especially if you're watching someone else do it. It sounds like damage. Our brains are wired to associate alarming sounds with harmful events, and a loud joint pop fits that template perfectly.

Second, the timing. Arthritis does develop as people age, and many of those people also cracked their knuckles for years. It's easy — and incorrect — to connect two things that happen to coexist. This is a classic example of correlation being mistaken for causation.

Third, and maybe most importantly, the warning was socially useful. Knuckle cracking annoys people. It's one of those sounds, like someone chewing loudly or tapping a pen, that can make a room quietly miserable. Telling someone it would cause arthritis was an effective way to make them stop — far more effective than simply saying "that sound is driving me crazy." The health threat gave the complaint authority it wouldn't otherwise have.

So the myth served a social function, and that made it stickier than the evidence ever warranted.

Is There Anything to Worry About?

Fair question. Some research has suggested that very long-term, habitual knuckle cracking might be associated with minor hand swelling or a slight reduction in grip strength over many decades. These findings are not consistent across studies, and the effects, where they appear, are modest. They're also nowhere near the arthritis claim.

If you crack your knuckles and enjoy it, the evidence says you're not headed for joint disease because of it. If it bothers the people around you, that's a different conversation — but at least now you know the health argument against it doesn't hold up.

The Takeaway

The arthritis warning was never grounded in solid medical evidence. It spread because the sound seemed dangerous, because it gave annoyed parents and teachers a persuasive reason to make you stop, and because nobody really pushed back on it for a long time. The research — including one man's remarkably committed six-decade personal experiment — has consistently found nothing to support it. Some myths persist because they're hard to study. This one persisted because it was too useful to let die.
